Detector: MALS DAWN w/ RI System Optilab

equipment

What is it?
A combination of a multi-angle laser light scatter detector (MALS) and a high-resolution refractive index (RI) detector is essential for examining molecular characteristics.

Manufacturer: Wyatt Technology

Model Name: DAWN

Applications: Equipment Application

Instrument Overview: The primary food macromolecules are carbohydrates and proteins, and these biopolymers have a broad range of molecular size distribution and large molecular size. These biomolecules are so large that they can scatter laser light, and the intensity and angle of scattered lights are associated with a molecular size and molecular mass. Therefore, signals collected from multi-angles (in this case, 18 angles), which covers from low to high angels, allowing us to convert the signals to molecular gyration radio size and molecular shape. In this system, an RI detector with high sensitivity and stability provides signals that can be convert to molecular mass. A combination of MALS-RI, therefore provides the essential molecular distribution and characteristics. The RI detector in this combination has high stability and sensitivity that allows us to determine some critical parameter, such as dn/dc values of molecules, that is to calculate the absolute molecular weight.

Technical features and specifications:
- The Multi-Angle Light Scattering (MALS) detector make static scattering measurements to quantify molar mass of macromolecules in solution from 200 Da to 1 GDa and molecular size range (Rg) from 10 nm to 1000 nm with shape specific models -
- The MALS instrument is equipped with a rear laser monitor to measure intensity of the laser beam prior to entering the flow cell to calculate compensation to the scattering signal for laser source intensity fluctuations, device aging, and dust and drift related to temperature changes. -
- The MALS instrument is integrated with an ultrasonic device that uses radio frequency to automate in-situ cell cleaning and removing particles adhering to the MALS flow cell to minimize detector noise and prolonging time between manual maintenance.
- The system is compatible in both organic and aqueous phase and all wetted materials should be 316 stainless steel, Kalrez, fused silica or F2 glass
- The system is able to determine absolute molar masses, sizes, second virial coefficient and must be compatible with existing or new HPLC/GPC/SEC and other major commercial Liquid Chromatography systems
- The Differential Refractive Detector able to be used as an on-line (chromatography mode) system connected in-line to any chromatography system such as GPC, FPLC or HPLC.
- The sample temperature control range is from 40C to 650C regulated at +/- 0.0050C
- Feature/Spec 8
